Questo testo � tratto dal discorso pronunciato da J.-P. Vernant (morto il 9.01.2007) nel 1999, in occasione del 50� anniversario del Consiglio d'Europa, e che � inscritto sul ponte che collega Strasburgo a Kehl: <<Passare un ponte, traversare un fiume, varcare una frontiera, � lasciare lo spazio intimo e familiare ove si � a casa propria per penetrare in un orizzonte differente, uno spazio estraneo, incognito, ove si rischia - confrontati a ci� che � altro - di scoprirsi senza "luogo proprio", senza identit�. Polarit� dunque dello spazio umano, fatto di un dentro e di un fuori. Questo "dentro" rassicurante, turrito, stabile, e questo "fuori" inquietante, aperto, mobile, i Greci antichi hanno espresso sotto la forma di una coppia di divinit� unite e opposte: Hestia e Hermes. Hestia � la dea del focolare, nel cuore della casa. Tanto Hestia � sedentaria, vigilante sugli esseri umani e le ricchezze che protegge, altrettanto Hermes � nomade, vagabondo: passa incessantemente da un luogo all'altro, incurante delle frontiere, delle chiusure, delle barriere. Maestro degli scambi, dei contatti, � il dio delle strade ove guida il viaggiatore, quanto Hestia mette al riparo tesori nei segreti penetrali delle case. Divinit� che si oppongono, certo, e che pure sono indissociabili. E' infatti all'altare della dea, nel cuore delle dimore private e degli edifici pubblici che sono, secondo il rito, accolti, nutriti, ospitati gli stranieri venuti di lontano. Perch� ci sia veramente un "dentro", bisogna che possa aprirsi su un "fuori", per accoglierlo in s�. Cos� ogni individuo umano deve assumere la parte di Hestia e la parte di Hermes. We are glad to announce the issue of the last number (N.31, january 2019) of our journal "Frenis Zero", whose subject is "Efficacy of psychoanalytic therapies and supervision". This book has the hard task to cover an interdisciplinary area in which psychoanalysis has to deal with infant research. The development of infant research methodologies is illustrated in the present book by the contribution written by Beatrice Beebe, whose �journey� leads us through the �creating� of a discipline with its creators, her traveling companions, such as Daniel Stern, Frank Lachmann, Joseph Jaffe and many others. Trevarthen�s chapter is a discussion of his work with T. Berry Brazelton, passed away on March 2018. Brazelton used his trust and enjoyment of innocent company to greet a newborn infant as a friend, and he showed that the baby is read to share friendship with mother and father, giving them joy. Brazelton�s belief in innate human nature transformed pediatric care and early diagnosis of developmental disorders, guiding treatment, not �of� the baby, but �with� him/her as an individual with unique expressions of vitality. The last two chapters, instead, deal with clinical implications of infant research. Tronick�s contribution focuses on mother-infant dyad as well as on analyst-patient one, conceived as open dynamic systems, capable of meaning making, in which coherence is at best imperfect, and coordination alternates with mismatching. In open dynamic systems messiness itself is inherent to the process of meaning making because of limitations in their capacity, �their different time scales, the many polymorphs of meaning that have to be integrated, and because of the many kinds of meaning making processes� (including affective, cognitive, memorial, linguistic, bodily and psychodynamic meaning making processes, such as a dynamic unconscious, projective identification and transference). �Dyadic states of consciousness� Tronick writes in the chapter �are joint creations and, as such, bring together the messy, unpredictable and inchoate features of two individuals� state of consciousness, not just the messiness of one�. But meaning meaning processes and security making ones, though normally overlapping each other, are not the same, and this heterogeneity between motivational systems (Lichtenberg et al., 2011) can cover the heterogeneity of psychopathological conditions. Lyons-Ruth and colleagues� chapter is focused on the representational world of the mother, particularly on the assessment of mother�s representation of role-confusion in her relation with her child. The authors call attention to the dimension of sexualisation in the relationship, a high indicator of role-confusion. This emerging body of work points to the importance of being alert to indicators of role-confusion in the clinical setting. The findings can inform and enrich counselling and psychology practice by familiarizing clinicians with how to listen for indicators of role-confusion while talking with parents about their relationship with the child.

The collection �Mediterranean Id-entities� is devoted to publish books in order to investigate the role of Mediterranean cultures from a psychoanalytic point of view, in front of the anthropological transformations concerning human societies and social institutions in the contemporary world. This book has the hard task to cover an interdisciplinary area in which psychoanalysis has to deal with fundamentalism as a social phenomenon and therefore with �bordering� disciplines (such as religion history, transcultural studies, cultural anthropology) often with epistemologies that for origin and history appear to be incomparable to it. Lene Auestad intends to integrate the psychological analysis of the subject with its social embedding. She investigates the importance of the social unconscious and its effects on the prejudiced intentions of the individual apart from its own active interpretations. She highlights the importance the psychoanalytical approach provides in understanding the unspoken, unconscious contents of the social phenomena and how much the socially critical approach is able to enrich the analytical view which merely focuses on the subject regarding the effects of the social consensus. While Auestad�s scrutiny aims at the social convention�s role as an agent affecting the individual�s deeds and thinking, Linden West�s contribution draws on �psycho-social� understandings, combining psychoanalysis and critical theory, as well as the work of John Dewey, to interrogate Islamic fundamentalist groups in a post-industrial city. It explores processes of self-recognition in groups and paranoid-schizoid modes of functioning, in which unwanted parts of self and of culture are split off and projected on to the other. The world is correspondingly divided into good and bad, pure and impure. John Dewey makes a crucial distinction between processes of democratic education and closed groups, which is what fundamentalist groups are, by reference to the quality of relationship to the other, and to experiential and narrative openness. However, it is also suggested that fundamentalism is ordinary, in that each of us can feel out of our depth, at times, and we may grab at ideas promising truth and nothing but the truth, which is ultimately illusion. Except not everyone reaches for a Kalashnikov, which is where individual biographies matter for subtler understanding of difference within commonalities. Fundamentalism has increasingly become a part of the political discourse in Western countries and is to a large degree associated with Islamic Jihadism. Fundamentalism has, however, been a concern in all religions, and Werner Bohleber in this book discusses its connections with violence in monotheistic religions. Fundamentalism is also a concern in professional organisations and in this book Sverre Varvin discusses the relation between fundaments for a science and fundamentalism in psychoanalysis. This is related to general trends of fundamentalism in religious and political contexts. A central question is how adherence to fundamentals, understood at basic principles for a profession or a religious-political movement, may develop into fundamentalism and how this may develop into more violent forms. Psychoanalytic understanding of mass psychology and unconscious processes at group levels are developed in this book by each of the outstanding authors in order to understand present Islamic and other forms of fundamentalist movements in the European context.

"THALASSA. Portolano of Psychoanalysis" is a production of "Frenis Zero" revue (Dir. Giuseppe Leo) and it would be an attempt to link psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, belonging to the Mediterranean countries. Why would we put the Mediterranean Sea at the centre of attention of psychoanalytic culture? Because it continues keeping , in spite of a time of globalisation of human, cultural and economic exchanges, a central role of hinge between West and East, between cultural patterns dramatically faced with the contemporary problem of sharing universalizable patterns of "humanitas" and civilization. Psychoanalysis, with its group and mass-psychology functioning theories, can help in understanding the anthropological transformations concerning human societies and social institutions in the contemporary world. Our preminent interest is focused on the transformations regarding the cultural "koin�" that has been historically configured as mediterranean, and, moreover, on the way psychoanalysis can provide interpretative means to investigate them thoroughly. Linking each other psychoanalysts who, in spite of their different professional backgrounds, share a common belonging to the same cultural milieu, means consulting those who think about such changes from a point of view in which psychoanalysis keeps a preminent role. The means to create this link would be the traditional ones (through international congresses and colloques), but also those provided by internet and new communication technologies.

Giuseppe Leo), n�e avec le but de mettre en r�seau psychanalystes et psychoth�rapeutes provenants de Pays M�diterran�ens. Pourquoi voulons nous mettre la Mer M�diterran�enne au centre de l'attention de la culture psychanalytique? Parce que celle-ci continue � tenir, bien que dans une �poque de mondialisation des �changes humaines, culturels et �conomiques, un role central de charni�re entre Occident et Orient, entre patterns culturels dramatiquement confront�s avec la question toute contemporaine de partager de patterns universalisables de "humanitas" et de civilisation. La psychanalyse, avec ses theories du fonctionnement groupal et des masses, peut nous aider � mieux comprendre les transformations anthropologiques concernantes les soci�t�s humaines et les institutions sociales dans le monde contemporain. Notre pr��minent interet est concentr� sur les transformations qui regardent cette koin� culturelle qui historiquement s'est form�e comme mediterraneenne , et sur le comment la psychanalyse peut donner des outils interpretatifs pour approfondir la connaissance de celles-ci. Perch� porre il Mediterraneo al centro dell'attenzione della cultura psicoanalitica? Perch� esso continua ad avere, pur in un'epoca di globalizzazione di scambi umani, culturali ed economici, quel ruolo centrale di cerniera tra Occidente ed Oriente, tra patterns culturali messi drammaticamente a confronto con la problematica contemporanea della condivisione di modelli universalizzabili di "humanitas" e di civilt�. Porre in collegamento tra di loro gli psicoanalisti che, pur nella diversit� delle tradizioni professionali di provenienza, condividono l'appartenenza al medesimo milieu mediterraneo, significa interpellare coloro che riflettono su tali rivolgimenti da una prospettiva in cui la psicoanalisi mantiene un ruolo preminente. Gli strumenti per creare tale rete saranno quelli tradizionali (attraverso dei seminari e dei congressi internazionali), ma anche quelli innovativi offerti da internet e dalle nuove tecnologie di comunicazione.

Psychoanalysis has always had to reckon with the epistemology of the witnessing of the analysand, but perhaps it has only recently been reckoning with the discourse of the ethics of testimony. And who are the people who have answered to testify in this book dedicated to the places of the memory of �Mediterranean civilisations and their discontents�? What many of the authors in it seem to have in common is the attention to the traumatic nature of certain places of the memory: theatres of wars, such as the wars in the Balkans (Janigro), or lines in the diary of a father, who miraculously survived genocide (J. Altounian). As Bohleber writes, psychoanalysis began as a theory of trauma. In this book, the places of the memory are often the rooms of analysis, places of re-evocation of collective traumas. In some cases, the victims of collective traumas, undergone in the home Mediterranean countries, take their dramas of migrants and refugees to analysts in the North of Europe (as in the case of Varvin and Papadopoulos). In other pieces, neither the geographical origin of the analysand nor that of the analyst have apparently any connection with the Mediterranean. We are referring to the essay by Ritter and that of Halberstadt-Freud: however, in them, the consulting rooms are places of the memory in which the analyst reflects on the subject of trans-generational transmission of collective guilt connected with Nazism and with the Shoah, which also affected the history of Mediterranean countries. In other contributions in this book, the places of the memory are those of the Middle East caught up in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. From different points of view, three authors, Gampel, Deutsch and Wirth, speak to us of places of the memory where the collective traumas have not been assigned once and for all to the work of historians (as in the case of the Shoah and of the other genocides of the 20th century) as, unfortunately, they are still on-going.

Presentation: The book gathers some papers concerning the dialogue between neuroscience and psychoanalysis. Following the Introduction written by Georg Northoff, concerning the possibility of overcoming the highly impasse generating contraposition between localizationism and holism, G. Vaslamatzis deals with a �Framework for a new dialogue between psychoanalysis and neurosciences�. In this chapter the author describes three points of epistemological congruence: firstly, dualism is no longer a satisfactory solution; secondly, cautions for the centrality of interpretation (hermeneutics); and, thirdly, the self-criticism of neuroscientists. David W.Mann in his contribution �The mirror crack�d: dissociation and reflexivity in self and group phenomena� tries to show how reflexive processes generate each of three levels of the human system (self, relationships, group) and integrate them one to another, while dissociative processes tend throughout to pull them apart. Health and illness within the self, the relationship and the group can be understood as special states of the dynamic equilibria between these cohesive and dispersive trends. In �Sleep, memory and plasticity� Matthew P. Walker and Robert Stickgold outline a review of the researches following the discovery of rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep, and specifically of those that began testing the hypothesis that sleep, or even specific stages of sleep, actively participated in the process of memory development. The last two chapters, �Clinical implications of neuroscience research in PTSD� by Bessel A. Van Der Kolk, and �Dysregulation of the right brain: a fundamental mechanism of traumatic attachment and the psychopathogenesis of PTSD� by Allan N. Schore, demonstrate how the psychopathology of traumatic conditions can be a fertile field of dialogue between neuroscience and psychoanalysis.

Con questo libro per la prima volta viene proposta in italiano la traduzione integrale delle opere di Vera Schmidt, psicoanalista e pedagogista russa, tra le fondatrici, insieme a Tatiana Rosenthal, Sabina Spielrein e Hermine Hug-Hellmuth, della psicoanalisi infantile. Vera Schmidt fond� nel 1921 l�Asilo sperimentale di Mosca, esperimento maturato nel contesto storico successivo alla rivoluzione russa, in cui �gli psicologi e i pedagogisti sovietici del periodo post-rivoluzionario si impegnarono nella realizzazione di una nuova scuola, (�) tramite la proposta di una educazione non coercitiva e libertaria, rispetto alle potenzialit� individuali�(dalla prefazione di Alberto Angelini).  Vlasta Polojaz, nella sua introduzione al libro, colloca l�esperienza dell�Asilo moscovita nel pi� ampio contesto della storia della psicoanalisi in Russia, di cui espone un sintetico excursus dai primi fermenti fino alla chiusura delle due societ� psicoanalitiche, quella di Mosca e quella di Kazan,  a seguito del peggioramento del clima culturale che si registr� con l�ascesa al potere di Stalin.   Oltre al �Rapporto sull�asilo sperimentale� (1924), il libro contiene i lavori di Vera Schmidt: �Lo sviluppo della pulsione di sapere in un bambino�(1930), e �L�importanza del succhiare il seno e del succhiare il dito per lo sviluppo psichico del bambino�(1926), in cui la Schmidt �si sofferma sull�importanza dell�oralit� nello sviluppo normale del bambino. Ella sottolinea l�apporto strutturante del succhiare il seno, il dito ed altri oggetti nell�evoluzione della personalit� di un lattante, collegandolo al processo di apprendimento�(dalla introduzione di V. Polojaz). Infine, un quarto lavoro della Schmidt, �Onanismo in bambini piccoli�(1928), viene per la prima volta tradotto in italiano in occasione dell�uscita del presente libro. Nella sua post-fazione, infine, Rita Corsa si sofferma, e formula delle ipotesi estremamente documentate, sui rapporti intercorsi tra due pioniere della psicoanalisi infantile russa: Vera Schmidt e Sabina Spielrein.

Il libro raccoglie i testi presentati al convegno L'ascolto nella psicoterapia e nelle relazioni di aiuto, tenutosi a San Miniato (PI) nei giorni 15 e 16 giugno 2012. A quale tipo di Ascolto ci riferiamo nell�ambito della relazione terapeutica? In una prospettiva psicoanalitica l�aspetto pi� significativo dell�ascolto diventa comprensibile proprio nel momento in cui, nello spazio terapeutico, cominciano a dischiudersi orizzonti conoscitivi rispetto a qualcosa che, se fino a quel momento sembrava non significare niente, progressivamente permette alla coppia analista-paziente di individuare e cogliere dei significati in quell�insieme prima indistinto di messaggi rumorosi e privi di senso. Del resto, siamo costantemente immersi e sommersi in un mondo di voci e suoni, che bombardano il nostro apparato uditivo in modo cos� martellante che � difficile �fare silenzio� per ascoltare o distinguere ci� che � veramente importante da ci� che � solo contorno, rumore. Talvolta, per�, pu� accadere anche il contrario, dato che noi stessi andiamo alla ricerca del frastuono assordante e indistinto per non confrontarci con la paura e l�angoscia, che sono dentro di noi.
